On 16 September 2021, the Cameroon Minister of Public Works, Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi, was in Ekok in the South West Region to assess work on the bridge over the Cross River and its access roads. The construction of the bridge over the Cross River to link Cameroon to Nigeria is completed. The 408 m long infrastructure is extended by 800 m of access road on the Cameroon side and 400m on the Nigeria side.

Located in the Eyumodjok Sub-division, the bridge required an investment of more than CFA21 billion provided by Cameroon and Nigeria with support from the African Development Bank and the European Union.

According to the Ministry of Public Works (MINTP), the bridge and its access roads form part of the Transport Facilitation Programme on the Bamenda-Mamfe-Abakaliki-Enugu corridor, which is part of the Lagos-Mombassa Trans-African Highway. The programme also includes a national component with the completion of the asphalting of the Bamenda-Mamfe-Ekok sections (198 km) and a regional component with the construction and equipping of a Single Border Control Post at Mfum.

From the economic standpoint, the new bridge opens a second access way which constitutes another cross-border connection between the two countries. This is an opportunity for Cameroon to market various commodities in Nigeria, which is an important market.

Indeed, Nigeria, a West African economic giant with a population of nearly 200 million, is Cameroon's important trading partner. According to the Cameroon National Institute of Statistics (INS), in 2020, Cameroon exported 57,027 tonnes of goods worth at over 16 billion FCFA to Nigeria; making the West African country the 4^th importer of Cameroonian products compared to other border countries namely Gabon, Chad, RCA, Equatorial Guinea and Congo.
